CELEBRATING 20 YEARS OF ELF

22 OCTOBER 1987 - 22 OCOTBER 2007

On 22nd October 1987 the Deed of Trust which established Exeter Leukaemia Fund (ELF) as a Charity was signed and registered (Charity No 297910)

Since that date, almost $4 million has been contributed to the treatment of Haematology at the Royal Devon and Exeter Foundation Trust

The primary achievement of the Exeter Leukaemia Trust is the building of the Haematology Centre 'the facility is without doubt the best in Europe' Professor John Lilleyman, President of the Royal college of Pathology) to which ELF contributed two thirds of the cost (£1.6million). ELF has also contributed circa £0.80 million to the purchase, maintenance and rental of equipment, ranging from blood pressure monitors to laboratories, chemotherapy and blood pumps and electric beds circa £0.75 million to Patient Care, including the specialist Counselor, Aromatherapy treatments and very recently the Elf Clinical Fellowship.

EXETER LEUKAEMIA FUND

ELF supports the work of The Haematology Unit based at the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital. The Unit treats the area's blood cancer victims, performs bone marrow transplants and conducts research to investigate the causes and treatment of leukaemia.

Because of referrals etc ELF operates within a large part of Devon and some of Somerset. The haematology Centre has the only fully accredited cell laboratory south of Bristol, licensed to handle cells for transportation.

To ensure that leukaemia ia and other blood cancer patients referred to the RD&E hospital receive the best available treatment ELF:

Purchases equipment not available through the NHS Trust for the investigation of leukaemia etc

Provides support and counselling for patients and their carers by funding a Haematology Councillor

Funds the employment and additional training costs for extra nursing staff

Funds the alteration to accommodation to improve the facilities for patient care

Funds research into the causes of leukaemia and into other cancers of the blood

Produced a 'Living with Leukaemia' video for newly diagnosed patients and their carers

Employs an aromatherapist to give beneficial massage to patients

Has built, in partnership with the RD&E Healthcare Trust, a new Haematology Centre to provide improved facilities for patients

Support the Molecular Genetics Research project which aims to establish tests which can identify changes in our genetic information which causes lymphoma and leukaemia
